A Position That Looks Lost at a Glance
The study was published in 1921 in the German chess magazine Kagans Neueste Schachnachrichten. The position is almost insultingly simple: a white king on h8, a white pawn on c6, a black king on a6, a black pawn on h5. White to play and draw.
Any player who has learned the rule of the square sees the problem immediately. Black's h-pawn needs four moves to promote. The white king stands on h8, well outside the pawn's square, and by the brutal arithmetic of chess endgames it can never catch the pawn in a straight race. Meanwhile White's own c-pawn looks doomed: the black king on a6 sits right beside it and will simply capture it. Counted square by square, White is losing both races. Réti's stipulation that White draws seems like a misprint.
That is precisely the trap. The rule of the square measures a direct chase. It says nothing about a king that refuses to chase directly.
1.Kg7!! The King Walks the Diagonal
The solution begins with the white king stepping to g7, apparently chasing a pawn it cannot catch. After 1.Kg7 h4 2.Kf6, the magic becomes visible. The king has moved two squares closer to the h-pawn, but because it travelled diagonally it has also moved two files closer to the queenside, where its own c-pawn waits.
Now Black must choose. If 2...h3, White plays 3.Ke6 (3.Ke7 also works), and after 3...h2 4.c7 Kb7 5.Kd7 both pawns promote on the same move. Queen against queen is a dead draw. If instead Black turns to deal with the c-pawn by 2...Kb6, White plays the quiet killer 3.Ke5. Take the pawn with 3...Kxc6 and 4.Kf4 lands the white king back inside the square of the h-pawn, which is now caught and lost. Push instead with 3...h3, and 4.Kd6 escorts the c-pawn home: 4...h2 5.c7 Kb7 6.Kd7 and again both sides queen together.
Every white king move carries both threats simultaneously. Black can answer one. He can never answer two.
Why the Geometry Works
The study exposes something counterintuitive about the chessboard itself. On the grid of 64 squares, a diagonal path is exactly as fast as a straight one. The journey from h8 to e5 takes three moves, the same as h8 to h5 or h8 to e8. A king moving at an angle therefore loses no time against either target, and gains the priceless ability to keep two threats alive at once.
Mathematicians later formalised this as a property of the Chebyshev distance, but Réti understood it as a chess player: kings do not move through Euclidean space.
