Why Endgames Matter
Many players invest their study time in openings, memorising fifteen moves of theory, only to reach an endgame they do not understand and lose a position they should have held or won. Between players of roughly equal strength, a high proportion of games do eventually reach an endgame — the pieces trade off, pawns become critical, and the king steps forward from its shelter to become an active participant in the fight.

One of the most important endgame principles is that in the endgame, the king is a fighting piece and must be used actively. In the middlegame, kings must hide behind pawns because heavy pieces threaten checkmate. Once queens and most rooks have been exchanged, the king can advance towards the centre, support passed pawns, attack enemy pawns, and seize key squares. A player who keeps the king passively on the back rank in an endgame wastes one of their most powerful remaining units.
